    Not Turkey for Thanksgiving?

Cheers! If you changed that dog to a cat, it might look like my house. Anyway, I'm not easily offended, and certainly not about the whole who-eats-what thing. :eat1: Anyway, I am only a conditional vegetarian. I had a piece of ring bologna, with a ketchup smiley face, on a Ritz cracker at...

    Flying/Swollen Ankles/Compression socks/etc

If you are especially concerned, give your doctor's office a call and ask if they are willing to write you some sort of note stating that you need an aisle seat to allow you to get up and walk regularly on the flight as a precaution against DVT. With that in hand, call British Airways and ask...

    Not Turkey for Thanksgiving?

I'm a vegetarian. I had an artichoke, plus the standard sides. Everyone else had turkey, though.

    Flying/Swollen Ankles/Compression socks/etc

If you wear a size 22/24, I don't think that you will have any issues on an international flight. I just returned from Europe and live on the east coast. The flight out was 7 hours, and the flight back was 10 hours. I wear a size 28/30, and bought just one ticket. I did not need a seat belt...

    Wine appreciation thread

I have really enjoyed several Argentinian Malbecs. We tried a Don Miguel de Gascon Malbec after the local supermarket put it on sale for $10/bottle (it retails here for less than $15, so it's always pretty affordable), and I think it's still my favorite of the varieties we've tried, but I...

    Hi.. Is anyone into photography?

Thanks, y'all. Florence was such a great place, and I just had a few hours there. I really want to go back and go to the Uffizi, and spend a (few more) hours wandering around, looking in the shops. And the view from the middle of the Ponte Vecchio is so spectacular that it seems impossible...

    Hi.. Is anyone into photography?

The Arno River taken from the Ponte Vecchio in Florence. It looks more like a watercolor than a photograph - but it was just a gray, rainy day, with a bit of fog/humidity in the air, hence the haze in the middle distance.

    Make ahead dishes for xmas

You can make pretty much any casserole a day or two ahead and refrigerate it (prior to putting on your crunchy/cheesy/whatever topping.) I would't go much (any) longer than that, or it won't be fresh, but it won't hurt the casserole to sit in the fridge (tightly covered) for a day or even the...

What's Your Favorite Kind of Cheese?

Here here - and, when fresh rather than aged - mild enough for most folks. It just has a hint of tang, and a lovely fresh taste. Although when I was a kid my movement tried to sneak goat cheese produced by this dude with whom she worked onto a pizza and it totally did not work. Anyhoo...

    NaNoWriMo Now!

Heya, I won NaNoWriMo last year, and then once before - maybe in 2006. I would absolutely be doing it this year, except that I'm leaving for Europe tomorrow, and won't be back until the 17th. I'm far too slow a writer to catch up starting on the 17th. I seriously considered (honestly!)...

    Classic toy commercials

When I was four years old, all I wanted in life was Milky, the Marvelous Milking Cow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdS9ZJ_Wf4k ...with "pretend milk tabs!" I thought its name was "Moo Moo the Milking Cow," but then I transliterated The Magic Pan chain of crepe restaurants as Peter Pan -...

My fellow video game nerds, whatcha been playing? Part 1

Hey! I have a question for the folks who post on this thread. I'm not really a video game nerd - more of a former pen and paper nerd (the D&D 2.0, Old World of Darkness, Gamma World) now grown into a boring, RPG-less adulthood, who has occasionally played computer RPGs as a poor substitute for...

    Twilight Alternatives

The Hunger by Whitley Streiber. It's the only book I ever read by him, but it's a chilling, haunted version of the vampire myth with a grotesque little secret at the heart of the tale. Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie starred in the movie version, back in the early '80s, and as I recall, the...

What's on the dinner table tonight?

Spinach/lettuce salad with some herbed gouda cheese to start, followed by a Mexican "pizza" on a whole wheat pita - salsa, cilantro, olives, and green onions topped with cheddar and jack and baked, then topped again with some ripe avocado. Mmm.
