I make no secrete of the fact I'm a liberal Democrat, but that doesn't mean I can't applaud a Republican when he takes a brave stance.
For the past several years San Diego's Republican mayor (and former police chief), Jerry Sanders, has been an unlikely advocate of gay marriage. Once an opponent of gay marriage Sanders actually listened to what gay constituents and gay family members had to say. He realized how much the Prop-8 campaign had hurt his gay constituents and changed his position.
Sanders was reelected in conservative San Diego despite his change of heart.
