My family usually got advent calendars from a local German butcher who imported them. The scenes on them were far more traditional than the American versions. I always liked the ones with a giant piece of chocolate for Christmas Eve. It was always fun, too, getting the chocolates out of their little tray. The ones we got had the chocolate poured right into the mold (the tray inside the cardboard) so you didn't know what the shape was until you managed to pop it out.
Most of the American versions I had as a kid had the crap chocolate. But one year, I remember my mom finding one from Hershey's that had a kiss for each day. I've looked and looked for them since, and I can't seem to find any.
A new trend now seems to be these wooden advent calendars that a parent can fill with treats or small toys. I've also seen really cute ones where each day is an ornament for a felt tree. [Trying to not give kids candy?]
So, some questions to spark your memories...
-Did you have an advent calendar as a kid?
-Do you still get an advent calendar?
-Do you buy them for your kids?
-If so, do you sometimes steal their chocolate?
-What's the best maker of advent calendars, if you always buy a certain kind?
-Did you have a non-candy advent calendar growing up?
-If so, did you hate your parents for not giving you daily chocolate?
-If someone filled a wooden advent calendar with your favorite goodies [only one piece of anything per day], what would you want in it?
