Ok..I'm sort of just trying to get my thoughts out...so bear with me. I guess I feel like I can sort this out better if I see it written, but I would love any advice anyone can offer. :)

So, I grew up in a family where giving back to the community was very important, especially as the community did a lot for my family. As a family we volunteered at church events, as a Girl Scout (I loved it-stayed in until I was so old that there was no more troop due to the lack of interest by other girls...which was 11th grade) I was very active in community service/volunteerism. I volunteered at soup kitchens and nursing homes in High School and when my Mom was the Volunteer Coordinator for the RI AIDS Quilt Project I was very active with that as well.

So, now I have pretty much done nothing other than write checks, or buy a few extra pairs of gloves and hand them to people that didn't have any, charitable donations through work-that kind of thing- for about 8 years and I REALLY feel like I need to start giving my TIME again and being really active with volunteering.

I found an Alzheimer's organization in RI that caught my eye. My Mom was diagnosed about 6 months ago so I was very gung-ho about getting started and called right away. I spoke a little bit with the woman that runs it and I'm supposed to help at a fundraising event on Sunday.

I'm fine with helping out, no problem. But the woman I spoke to was VERY eager to have me help with finances, marketing, fundraising..pretty much anything she needs help with. Again, I don't mind giving my time. The thing is, the organization sounds a bit..."off". I don't think it's a scam exactly, but I think the funds raised could be better used. What this organization does, is raise money as an award for whomever it is that finds "THE CURE". The prize money is $20 Million. What really made me think twice was one section of the website where it states will award the amount that has accrued in the Alzheimer's Prize account at the time of the discovery and will not be liable for any additional amount.

On one hand, while I think that the woman who started this organization has WONDERFUL intentions, I feel like maybe she had this up in the clouds fantasy idea and just ran with it instead of sitting down and really looking at what is the best way to use the money raised. On the other hand, the money is still raised for a good cause, and they need my help. So many organizations require that their volunteers work regular office hours which I completely understand but cannot commit to with working a full time job and part time school. Here they need my help, and are grateful for any help I can offer.

I don't know if this is making sense to anyone else. I just know that I need to help people, and I want to make sure that what I am doing is honestly beneficial to people.
