I pulled out my charts and cued up the best ones. As I peruse the year 1972, I was happily reminded of the rock classics featured, and the alternately gritty and sweet R & B of that era. Some highlights...

97..."Layla" Derek & the Dominoes.....one of the great rock anthems and this was the second go-round for this one. A year before, a "radio friendly" version was edited and it bombed. The full length version was sent out in '72 and it "eased my worried mind" all the way to #10.

87..."Popcorn" Hot Butter....complete use of the Moog Synthesizer.

72..."Goodbye To Love" Carpenters....they were the hit machine of that era and this was one of their best songs.

68..."Joy" Apollo 100....not the first time a classical or traditional tune was rocked up, but this was well done.

64..."Garden Party" Rick Nelson....not known as a song writer, this is one of best-crafted pop songs of the 70's

52..."Mother and Child Reunion" Paul Simon....rhymin' Simon's first solo (and I think best) hit.

51..."Freddie's Dead" Curtis Mayfield....gritty R & B...another great song from the "Shaft-like" films of those days

41..."Betcha By Golly Wow" Stylistics....sweet R & B....accelerated the Philadelphia soul sound.

36..."Precious & Few" Climax....one of the great one hit wonders, but more importantly a reaffirmation that there is always room for sweet, innocent love songs.

23..."Nights In White Satin" Moody Blues...again one of the great rock anthems ever.

13..."Let's Stay Together" Al Green....in 1972, nobody had more big hits than "the Preacher"

11..."My Ding-A-Ling" Chuck Berry....can you believe this was Chuck's biggest hit?...''this is our alma mater, we must do our alma mater." Now this song WAS about "silver bells hanging from a string?" Right? Anyone? :)
