Some of the women in my office are talking about yet another new fat-busting pill (Xenical or Alli) that will soon be available over the counter in non-prescription form, and they wanted my opinion. That's it, ask the happiest, fattest woman in the office for her advice about weight loss. Probably more like a reality check.
I said that when Fen-Phen came out a decade ago, it did indeed cause dramatic weight loss, but many users developed some kind of heart valve disease. That was a so-called cure far worse than the so-called problem. Now this new Alli pill already has some interesting known side effects, and I doubt that chronic flatulence would enhance my feminine charms, thank you very much (my chronic hiccups already make me jiggle better anyway ). Heaven knows what other side effects this new weight-loss pill might have, and it doesn't seem to be all that effective anyway. The benefits probably don't outweigh the potential risks. No doubt some users will abuse the pill too.
I've made my informed decision to take my chances on obesity, and so far so good.
