Attitudes towards being fat in the UK

So, after this little article brightened my day and made my heart swell with national pride, I thought it might be interesting to see what people thought of the UK's attitude toward a person being fat and, more importantly, where it comes from.

So, less or more acceptable to be fat in the US vs UK? Why is that? Personal experiences?
