As a summer project, I want to convert the majority of my approximately 500 LPs to CD. I was interested in doing this over a year ago, and now I'm eager to begin.

I have a spare turntable that I could bring in here to my computer room. I wanted to get the right equipment for the job, so this morning I Googled "LP to CD conversion" and found this page. The problem is, I'm not all that technically oriented, and I feel a little overwhelmed at the information out there.

I have three PCs, but the one I'm currently using is a Compaq Presario (pretty basic model) that I got at Wal-Mart because I thought the other PC I was using had died (turns out I was wrong). I think it's about a year old. In my living room I have a JVC RX-309 digital receiver, a Nakamichi CDC-200 5-disc CD changer, a Yamaha TT-400U turntable, and and a pair of Klipsch KG 3.2 speakers. I also have an Onkyo CP-1010A turntable that I was planning to use to do the conversion, but, if the Yamaha is better for that, I can easily switch.

I know I'll have to buy some type of apparatus (cable, whatever) to hook the turntable up to the PC, and some software. Oh, and I guess I'm going to need some good CDs, so I'll need to know what type I should buy. I just wanted to ask any of you who may be more knowledgable about this type of stuff what your recommendations/questions for me might be. (Times like these I really, really miss my audiophile/technogeek friend of long ago.)

P.S. I really don't know squat about MP3 stuff, either, like Napster-type (yeah, I know, there are newer sites than that out there) places where you download music files. I need to get up-to-speed on this type of technology and I'm eager to learn; I just feel that this is secondary to my main concern right now. I'm willing to get a rundown on the basics of that as well, but I really want help with the conversion stuff first.
