Becoming a Penguinista: Switching to Linux

I don't know how posters here hang out in ye olde nerdery, but I will ask anyway.

I'm seriously considering switching to Linux, and would like any tips that would make this conversion process pain-free.

First, though. On the question of back-up, would I do best to back data up to discs, or spend the money on an external?
