My form of activism is simply to set a positive example as a fat woman. Every so often I hear what an affect I've had, and it happened again.

One of my many cousins hosted a Christmas Eve party, and Art & I weren't exactly looking forward to it because some of my relatives seem to be on starvation diets this year. Some of cousins' daughters (first cousins once removed?) are trying to "out-thin" each other, and they've become pretty crabby in their mis-guided efforts to be glamour princesses.

The kicker came when another cousin's daughter, who is the 2nd fattest member of my extended family after me, announced her engagement! She's about 25 years old, average height and well over 300lb, and her fiancé sure seemed like a nice guy. Handsome too. I was really touched when she said that I was a role model for her. She said I seemed so successful and upbeat, and Art & I were so happy and affectionate to each other, so she tried to accentuate the positive too, and it worked. Everyone considered her the fat ugly duckling in the family, but she became a supersize swan. They'll be married next July.

Methinx the ultra-thin glamour princesses expected everyone to fawn over them, but instead their noses got out of joint when their fat cousin swept the board with her trump card, a diamond engagement ring. It was fun to watch everyone fawn over the fat girl and her fiancé. I didn't have much time to talk to them, but my impression is that he's not necessarily an FA, and that he loves her for who she is. It's like déjà vu all over again, because that's what happened to Art & me 3 decades ago.
