Name women who had the best singing voices, and I'm judging strictly on voice quality and nothing else...
In no particular order
Mary Wells- her smooth, satin quality lilting voice is matched by no one else. Listen to "You Beat me to the Punch" and "You lost the sweetest boy" and you know what I'm talking about. Very underrated artist.
Pat Benatar- Just listen to "Love is a BattleField". Her voice is heavenly yet made for rock.
Chaka Khan-nothing further to say, her range is out of this world.
Patti Labelle-Yelling is out of this world
Marilyn Mccoo-She was part of the Fifth Dimensions. She had that rich quality to her voice.
Sade-not a high powered singer, but her voice is a very rich and distinct alto
Whitney-- nothing further to say
Mariah-again, nothing further to say
Florence Ballard of the Supremes--she should have been the lead with her awesome range, listen to her soaring soprano background vocals on "Let me go the Right Way"
Stephanie Mills- Petite lady with a powerful voice. Favorite song "Whatcha gonna do?"
Teena Marie--nothing further to be said!
Ronnie Spector--Her raspy voice can break glass
Linda Rondstandt- smooth, velvety vocals
Phylis Hyman- rest in peace
Barbara Streisand and Celine Dion--powerhouses with soaring vocals and control
Minnie Riperton-- the voice of an angel with a high octave range
