california where to stay

hi, im coming to los angeles in october for a couple of weeks, i have no idea where to stay, probably one of the beaches, where would you guys recommend, ive looked at travel forums and they say santa monica but it seems expensive, and id rather use that money as my travel expenditure.

also open to any ideas on things to see and do etc,also willing to meet anyone for a drink if they are interested
