I have read arguments that the United States needs an armed citizenry in order to protect itself from some unknown force that might try to take over the country. I have seen suggestions that had the citizens of Europe been armed the Nazis could never have conquered other countries.

If all it takes is determined citizens with guns for people to protect themselves from tyrants who are trying to or who have taken over in their country than the United States could have saved many tens of thousands of US soldier lives by air dropping hundreds of thousands of rifles into France. The Germans would have gotten some of the rifles but the armed citizens would use the American arms to get the guns back from the Germans.

If all it takes is armed citizens than the United States could have simply kept its troops in England and let the French people drive out the Germans and then invite Charles de Gaulle back in. If the above is utter nonsense then the idea that private citizens with guns could have kept the Nazis out is also nonsense.

I've done a lot of reading about World War II. I have not read of any high-ranking politician or general proposing saving American lives by dropping guns into France. Can anyone send me a quote or a source of Eisenhower, Gen. Patton, or Charles de Gaulle, or bomber Harris, or Bernard Montgomery, or Winston Churchill, or George Marshall, or any other major Allied figure making such a suggestion?
