so late last night i happened to catch the A&E biography of (the one, the only, the altogether amazing) cass elliot. for the most part, it was a sweet and tasteful tribute to one of the most captivating voices of the 20th century - but there were parts that pissed me off. i'm not sure if anyone else here has seen it, but it bothered me that so MUCH of the focus was on her weight.
for one thing, i'm sorry, but david crosby calling anyone 'terrifically overweight and unhealthy' repeatedly, does not sit well with me. nor does the constant reiteration of the whole "it was CRAZY because, you see, michelle phillips was thin and beautiful, while cass was ugly and fat! i mean can you imagine such a thing?" nonsense. it occurs to me that cass wasn't even THAT fat - reports have her at just under 300 pounds at her heaviest. it just bothers me that any plus-size woman in the public eye's weight will inevitably be exaggerated to the point where she's painted as, like, the largest human being who's ever walked the earth.
it also sucks that every single bio of her or the mamas and the papas that i've seen, characterizes her as this hopelessly boy-crazy, lonely soul who couldn't get a man because of her size. bleh. SO obviously not the case.
at any rate!
i think she was absolutely gorgeous, brave, and unfathomably talented. one of her friends who was interviewed for the biography said: 'hearing cass's voice was like sliding slowly into a bubble bath'. i don't think i could put it any better than that.
so yes. appreciation.
and eye candy.
