cat-dog need pet advice!!

Hi everyone!

we recently (as in today!) got a cocker spaniel puppy which is great and she's absolutely lovely... but we have a cat who naturally is less than pleased with the new arrival. We haven't let them meet freely as we fear Lucy (the cat) will strike out at the puppy--- anyone have any advice on how to make this situation easier?
I know it's possible for cats and dogs to get along- just not sure how to get there...
