I start college in August and right now I'm torn between two majors. I originally wanted to do something in the psychology/counseling area, but I've heard the job market sucks for psych majors atm. So I'm trying to decide between Health Sciences (I've always been interested in medical stuff, got 100% on every Anatomy test in High School, too much time spent hanging around doctors as a chronically ill child, I think) and Graphic Design (I love art and Graphic Design seems like a more lucrative choice than a Studio Art major, plus I might get to create ads for stuff, which always seemed like a fun thing to do).
I'm kinda leaning more towards Graphic Design, for a number of reasons:
1. I have cerebral palsy, which means I am unable to walk and also have limited hand function, which would make many of the more hands-on health-related careers difficult. And with graphic design you can work from home a lot, which would be a plus since I don't drive, and in future I could spend more time with my kids if I have any.
2. I hate math and the graphic design major doesn't require any math classes. The health sciences major only requires 1 college algebra class, but I'd rather not take any, plus it requires chemistry classes which I didn't much care for in High School. I'm nervous about taking classes I might do poorly in because a lot of my financial aid is dependent upon keeping my GPA up.
The Health Sciences major is a more complicated matter, as it has lots of very different potential career paths springing from it which I am considering. I also have questionable motives for many of the careers I'm considering in this area, revolving as they do around certain fetishes I have. I'm not sure if taking a job that sexually excites me is unethical somehow. If I were male I'd be concerned about harassment suits stemming from inopportune boners too, but at least I don't have that to worry about. Here's my school's list of health sciences jobs and some of my personal comments on them:
Optometry (I have a glasses fetish)
Pharmacy
Health Services Administration
Physician Assistant
Chiropractic
Dental Hygiene
Public Health
Medical Laboratory Technology
Medical Radiologic Technology
Medical Sonography (I have a full bladder/pants wetting fetish which gives me some sadistic fantasies involving pregnant women coming in for full bladder ultrasounds)
Nuclear Medicine Technology
Surgical Technology
Physical Therapy
Occupational Therapy
Food Science
Nutrition (I'm very interested in food, and obviously as a nutritionist I would prolly see many overweight clients, but I start raging when I think of all the fat-shaming and food-shaming I'd be expected to do. Plus, how many ppl do you know who would trust a fat nutritionist?
So anyway, if anyone has any advice or stories to share about how you picked your major, or just college advice in general, I'm all ears.
