Cleaning lots of hair off a vacuum roller

OK, I turned over my vacuum and found about 10 pounds of cat and human hair stuck in the roller and the brush. I've tried cutting it off with a knife and have removed about 50% of it. The roller was pretty easy to clean but there is a significant amount left in the brush. Any suggestions?

One day I'm gonna get a Dyson...
