Computer Virus Protection Help

My virus protection is about to expire and I'm wondering if I should renew it or not. I know my computer needs some sort of virus protection but I don't know which is really the best protection at the best price. Right now I have Norton. I can't remember offhand exactly what I pay for it but I know it's $50+. Anyone have any suggestions about what I should be using? I appreciate any help or advice you have.
Your quick help is appreciated because I only have a few days until my current protection expires and I need to get protection ASAP!
