Our President may be a true political genius. By baiting the Conference of Bishops into taking an unreasonable position at odds with views of ordinary Catholics and by making an accommodation with almost all other Catholic groups President Obama has successfully isolated and defanged the Bishops (the most conservative Catholic group).
The Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, the Catholic Health Association (which represents Catholic hospitals), Catholic Charities, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious and the Sisters of Mercy -- signed onto the administration's plan over the bishops' objections. The fact that so many Catholic organizations were willing to defy the Bishops is evidence of the Bishops' waning power.
