So, I am on my company's "Associate Appreciation Committee" and I am responsible for coming up with our idea for October. Last year there was a pumpkin decorating contest, last month bagels and cookies for everyone (so it runs the gamut).
I thought it would be fun to get everyone an apple and a stick, and get some crockpots and make caramel dip for caramel apples! And have goodies to roll them in like chopped nuts, coconut, mini m&ms, peanut butter chips, autumn leaves candies (see pic above), etc. Also, I would have cellophane bags for them to take them home in, in case they want to give them to their kids.
I googled it and saw I wasn't the first to have this idea.
Have any of you tried to make caramel apples? Does the idea of doing dozens of them seem like a crazy, crazy undertaking? (oooh good Halloween word!)
We have about 130 people but I am guessing no more than 70 will be interested in dipping their apples. (Behave! I mean that literally.)
What I want to know is:
(1) have you made caramel apples? what should I be careful of? (Someone told me the caramel sometimes doesn't stick to the apple, but she didn't know how to prevent that.)
(2) have any more ideas for toppings? and
(3) any better idea for our associate appreciate celebration for October? (we are limited to about $2.50 per person, and we have 130 in our location).
P.S. here is the recipe, in case you clicked on this thread for a recipe. I was thinking of getting real caramel from a candy-making supply store (no, I won't make it myself. get real!)

Crockpot Caramel Apples
Serving Size: 8
Notes:
These are easy to make. The extras you can add on are only limited by your imagination.
Ingredients:
2 pkg. (14 oz.) caramels
1/4 C. water
8 apples
8 sticks
optional
nuts
M&Ms
mini chocolate chips
candy decorations
Preparation:
In crockpot, combine caramels and water. Cover and cook on high for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, stirring frequently. Wash and dry apples. Insert stick into stem end of each apple. Turn control on low. Dip apple into hot caramel and turn to coat entire surface. Holding apple above pot, scrape off excess caramel from bottom apple. Place on greased wax paper to cool. Once the carmel has set you may wish to roll the apples in the toppings of your choice.
P.S. if you have other ideas TELL ME QUICK! Our committee meets 9:30 AM tomorrow!
