Louise goes on a hunger strike.

Louise is diabetic. When she was in the hospital the hospital used something they called sliding scale. . Louise uses something that she calls carb counting. With sliding scale the patient eats their meal and then two hours later their sugar is tested. The patient has been given enough insulin to bring their sugar levels back down to between 150 and 200.

With carb counting Louise will evaluate each item on her plate for whether or not it was a carb. For each carb she would take five units of insulin. If the sugar level test given just before the meal showed a blood sugar of over 150 Louise would take another five units of insulin. The hospital staff was insisting that testing sugar before you ate and then taking insulin based on what you were eating was not medically sound and that the medically sound way was to test sugar two hours after you ate. When they set a tray in front of Louise that had four carbohydrates on it Louise stated that she would not eat the carbohydrates. The hospital staff stated that, if she would not eat the carbohydrates, she would not be allowed to eat anything. Louise's hunger strike went on for a couple of hours and then finally they decided to administer insulin following Louise's directions. Over the next day or two hospital staff expressed amazement that Louise’s is sugar stayed within a reasonably normal range.

The hospital staff was amazed at Louise's ability to figure out which ones were carbohydrates and which ones were not. Louise gave the hospital staff a quick course on how to tell which ones were carbohydrates. She showed the staff the menu that she got with each meal that she ate. She pointed out that on the menu the items it had little stars beside them were carbohydrates. Louise explained that the secret to her success was counting the number of stars beside the list of items of foods that she ate. The hospital staff was amazed at Louise's brilliance.

One Louise was transferred to the nursing home she was again in a situation where they use sliding scale. This time she only had to threaten a hunger strike before they caved and let her do it her way.

I know there are those who, after an activism post, respond and say that they do not do activism and simply by living a life of dignity and without complaint they are being activists. Louise is not that dignified. She prefers to confront rather than let the hospital give her procedures that will increase the rapidity with which she loses her eyesight, kidney function, and feet.
