Friday I was at the Chamber of Commerce meeting of the business and education committee. One of the other members is a fairly high up person in the local hospital. He brought literature about a local Nutrition and Wellness Conference. The conference will take place on Wednesday, June 20, 2007. Some of the topics discussed will be: Magnitude of the Regional Obesity Problem, Childhood Obesity, A Healthier World Starts with You, and Nutrition and Physical Activity Partnership of Washington County.
The hospital administrator told me that he had ordered the furniture for the meeting room and made sure that when he ordered the furniture that all of the chairs were armless and he also fought to make sure that they were 2 inches wider than most meeting room chairs.
I asked him who would be the person at the meeting who would be talking about the effects of size discrimination. He said that they did not have any such person but that questions would be allowed from the floor.
There are two particular questions I hope to ask. One will be to get to the meeting about an hour before it takes place and wander around to look at the local doctors offices in the facility and write down the room numbers of those offices that have no armless seating. In the meeting I hope to point out that if they say fat is unhealthy what are they planning to do about the following doctors offices that have no armless seating.
After the keynote address ,which will be A Healthier World Starts with You!, I hope to ask how many of the people who attended the meeting came on pedal powered vehicles.
If someone talks about how obesity shortens peoples lives I hope to start asking questions about how much pension money will be saved by the shorter lives. I might also suggest that if Americans are getting fatter and if being fat shortens their lives, is it likely that Social Security will not run out of money.
Should be an interesting day. If anyone else wishes to come to the conference on June 20 I willing to consider letting them stay in my house for free.
Yours truly,
Russell Williams
