Harry is the president and I am a vice president of the local NAACP. We received a signed written statement complaining about the way a local housing development governing body was acting. Harry and I went to a meeting to simply watch and get a feel for what was going on. Harry and I both wore suits and both had a pad of paper and took notes. Harry and I sat apart.
After about an hour and a half the committee went into executive session and asked anyone not on the committee to leave the room. I promptly did. For a while I waited for Harry to come out and when he did not I left, figuring that he would call me eventually.
Later that evening I got a call from Harry. As he was starting to leave someone from the committee stopped him and started asking him a lot of detailed questions. They wanted to know who he was, where his business card was, and why he did not announce to everyone that he was from the NAACP. They accused him of being there under false pretenses.
Lets see, Harry and I were both wearing suits, Harry is about 6 foot five, I am about 6 foot. Harry and I are both in our 60s. Harry is a former NFL player and still has a magnificent body. I wasnt and dont.
So why was so much attention focused on Harry and none on me? Surely it has nothing to do with the fact that Harry is black and I am white.
