I brought my son in for his yearly physical yesterday. His weight is up from sitting on his butt all summer, but there wasn't any issues beyond that.
Our peditrician is a shoot from the hip kind of guy. None of us have a problem with that until yesterday.
The Boy was spoken to about the changes he can expect his body to start going through as he'll be 11 this year. His doctor talked to him about voice changes, body odor, muscle growth, as well as what is considered normal for penis growth and pubic hair.
My son was cool with this chat until his doctor got to the penis and pubic hair part. He actually gringed when the subject was brought up and managed to change the subject back to body odor. He's proud that he raids his father's pit stick and uses it in the morning.
I've never been one of those parents that gave body parts weird names, nor did I use terms like "Pee-Pee" or "Poo-Poo" Granted when he was younger I never asked him if he had to "urinate" before we left the house, but I never came up with cutsesy names either. I've also never told him that the human body is dirty, ect. When he has questions, both his father and I answer them honestly.
The conversation from yesterday hasn't been mentioned at all today, but I know it will eventually. How do I get The Boy past feeling so awkward about himself and what he will be experiencing probably sooner than later as my husband was 6 foot tall and had 5 O'clock shadow by the time he was 11. I don't think the height will come that fast for The Boy, but I don't doubt the rest of it as his shoulders are broadening out, ect...
The whole thing strikes me as strange as this is the same kid that will parade around the house naked, so it isn't as if he's ashamed or modest. We've had to get on him about this very habit as it isn't so cute now that he's older, but still, we've never told him that a clean body is nasty or otherwise.
Thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks.
