Dear editors:

In a February 11 letter to the editor a writer states "the Second Amendment is clear. It simply states 'the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed'. This is the law of the land that is a correct and popular law"
The writer then states, "The Second Amendment protects us all, and is here to stay."

Unfortunately the NRA does not seem to fully support the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment states that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.. The Second Amendment does not say the right of the people who are not convicted felons nor considered seriously mentally unstable shall not be infringed upon. The NRA is pushing to keep guns out of the hands of people who are convicted felons and of the people who have serious mental problems. I personally agree that It seems right and reasonable to keep guns out of the hands of potentially dangerous people but that is not what the Second Amendment mandates. If it is proper to infringe on the right of convicted felons and mentally unstable people to bear arms than that is a slippery slope. If the NRA is willing to argue that convicted felons and seriously mentally disturbed people should not be allowed to exercise their right to bear arms how can the NRA then argue that everybody else should be allowed to carry guns most anyplace they want to?

If convicted felons are not allowed to exercise their constitutional right to bear arms how is it possible to then argue that the Second Amendment forbids the limiting of the number of bullets that can be in the gun clip? If mentally disturbed people are not allowed to exercise their constitutional right to bear arms how is it possible to then argue that the Second Amendment forbids limiting the number of people who can carry concealed weapons?
