Okay, so...maybe I'm just really grumpy in the morning...I've never claimed to be a "morning person". I got so fed up with the guys on the other radio show I listened to, I switched morning stations.

During this morning's traffic report, the lady who usually does it was complaining about someone outside her office banging on the vending machine. She said "It must be someone overweight trying to get their morning fix." The crew proceeded to laugh about it, talking about how grumpy the chick was because she is pregnant. The whole thing just went all through me, so, again...I felt compelled to write an email to the station:

"Before you delete this email thinking I’m just a rude, angry listener, I do have a point. Bear with me.

Lisa ******* must be just a traffic reporter because she can’t do any better.

Lisa ******* must be doing radio because she’s not pretty enough for tv.

Lisa ******* is a bigot.

My point? Those statements are as ridiculous as hers was about assuming a fat person (okay, she said "overweight"...better choice of words, so that takes the sting away) was beating on the vending machine, given that all I know about her are the basic facts presented on the show. Being a radio personality, you all have a responsibility for what you say on air, I’m fairly certain you would agree. Does this responsibility not apply to rude stereotypes and assumptions?

Okay, okay, it was just an off-handed, small, innocent comment; and, after all, she is “pregnant and grumpy”….so that makes it okay. While you’re all laughing and making a joke about this email, remind yourselves that it’s okay to make rude jokes about fat people because, hey, they’re just all big, lazy slobs who eat all the time and have no self-control, who must get food at all costs (especially by beating down vending machines); and their feelings are shielded underneath all that fat, right? And, after all, it IS pc/socially acceptable to make fun of fat people, so it's got to be okay to make little comments here and there...it's not like anyone cares.

Think I’m over-reacting? Try being a fat person in this society full of jokes and rudeness based on assumptions, misinformation and warped societal standards.

Rock on. You’re all very cool."

So...we'll see. I'm thinking about doing some shopping for books-on-tape. Much better morning listening, I'd say.
