Some of the most offensive ads in my opinion are diet ads, it isn't just what is said as how it's said. But diet ads aren't the only ones excluding or degrading certain body types, showing models airbrushed to perfection -suggesting the viewer is deficient and their product will cure their lack. But playing on peoples' fear and insecurities as an advertising tool is something that really irks me. Yeah I said it, I don't do manipulation well.
Something tells me that the level of deceit in advertising is so vast that I wonder if there is a way to undo the damage done by years of being programmed consumers.
So this has me thinking....if I had a magic wand and could "fix" advertising, what would I change? Would it be enough to make advertising honest? Would it be enough to include a more honest reflection of society? Would I also have to "fix" the products being advertised to be more inclusive?
Maybe I'm just entertaining "if I ruled the world..." But something in me believes that it takes no more effort to create empowering advertising than the standard "You suck, but you'll suck less after you buy this."
For example: Has anyone seen the fruit of the loom commercial where the fruit guys are sitting around reading letters and you hear the voice of a woman writing thanking FOTL for thinking of her curves? To me, that was honest, simple and effective. I had a moment of "Aww...someone out there is just like me!" and my opinion of FOTL was instantly favorable. Is it manipulation? Sure. But it left me feeling good about me as well as their product and ad.
Have you seen ads that left you feeling good about you? What was the product and what was their approach?
I've said for years that if the plus size community would use their power as consumers, we could completely change the media and the markets we feel so slighted by.
What are your thoughts on this?
