Yesterday I caught a radio ad promoting saving energy, apparently backed by the Alliance to Save Energy. The spot seemed to be targeted at children, with a tag at the end directing them to a website--www.energyhog.org.

The spot uses hoggish characters as energy wasters. What caught my attention was a line describing one of the characters as having "more blubber than brains." If you follow the link, it takes you to a children's game using the hogs as characters. Boss Hogg, for example is described this way:

Height: 3 feet tall
Weight: Far, far more than he should
Diet: Anything you put in front of him.

The other Hogg character descriptions are more benign. Normally I don't get too worked up about stuff like this, but it bothered me that something directed toward children would include this kind stereotyping. Apparently there are also classroom materials for schools using the "Hogg Family."

The website includes a link to audio and video versions of their PSA, but the radio spot shown there isn't the one I heard. I don't have high speed internet right now, so I can't watch the videos to see if they include that line.

Has anyone else heard the spot I'm talking about? I was outside gardening while I was listening, and I'd like to know if I really heard what I thought I did.

According to the Alliance website, these are the backers of the commercials.
