Fat City?

So where are these fat "promise" lands I am always hearing about. I live north in Pennsylvania and since I was a little girl I have heard rumors about places where being fat was in. Specifically in the south (georgia/virginia/carolina's). From family and friends sayings like "in the south people like meat on their bones," always has popped up when weight was thrown into conversations. It always made me laugh and I wonder if these sayings were true.

I've noticed that some of these "fat values" have cropped up in portrayals of southern life in movies and litterature.

has anyone else heard of places like this? lol sayings? or even rumors?
