one thing i've often felt conflicted about is how with all of the talk about fat pride the fat community seems often to operate on the down low. i can understand that some people don't want events, especially those intended to be mainly social, tainted by protesters etc... but i've also often felt that different events need to be in mainline newspapers and magazines and television to show our pride and normalcy. the secretive aspect doesn't feel like pride to me personally.
i've often felt protests against events might even be just what we need to draw the community together and fight a common cause. in the cases where i have seen some organized opposition it seems to have done just that. the infighting totally went away and people seemed more focused. it added an excitement and purpose that i think people needed. you could see it was empowering for people to do something with support from a lot of friends and not go it alone like in everyday life. the effect of that support on people who got to participate seemed deep profound and life changing. and we also drew support and members from the outside that we never knew we had which was also affirming. what do you think? are we ready for a more traditionally public kind of activity? will we ever be?
