Veni, vidi, Lionel Richie
Dr. Lloyd Sederer apparently makes the connection that due to the host of physical, hormonal and eating problems obese children have, they do worse in school.
Maybe Dr. Lloyd needs to look at competing factors such as bullying, video games, the Internet and other factors that affect sedentary, overweight kids as well as thin ones to see if that's a correlation as well.
I would also say if you're a clinician with an "askdr[insert name].com" domain, don't be surprised if some of us don't raise an eyebrow as to your methods. As if labels aren't bad enough for overweight kids, automatically labeling them stupid because their insulin levels are a bit wonky is just adding fuel to the fire.
Also, the reason some of us didn't do well in some classes is because we were using that time developing ways to take over the world.
information from the The BODY Project shows that obese youth have problems with reading and arithmetic, memory, attention, and decision-making. Imagine how learning, and consequently school performance, will be impaired if you are having trouble in these essential areas of brain functioning. And, by the way, the more overweight youth are the more they experience the medical consequences of obesity, and the greater the difficulties they have -- in all these areas of cognitive functioning.
That's an interesting inference considering every chubby kid I knew in grade and high school tended to be the ones who excelled at math, reading, science and English.
