In yesterdays Globe and Mail (a Canadian newspaper), their trivia section noted (without listing a source for the figures, unfortunately), that it is estimated the US has between seven hundred thousand and one million people who are morbidly obese, with from one hundred and forty thousand to four hundred thousand of those weighing over 400 pounds.
Now, morbidly obese means BMI equal or greater than 40, which means for a women of 55 about 240 pounds, and for a man of 510 280 pounds. (Ive seen another classification system which instead of morbidly obese calls this obese III, with obese I being BMI 30-35, and obese II being BMI 35 to 40, and obese IV being BMI 50+). Anyway, the numbers above would suggest that from 20% to 40% of those with BMI over 40 weight over 400 pounds, which seems unlikely to me. Possibly these two estimates come from different groups or with different techniques for doing the estimate.
Even if not all that accurate, it does give some idea of the number of very fat people out thereso no more complaining There are no BBW/BHM near where I live! ;-)
