The great white north, eh?
'Tis finally the season across most of Canada to put away the mukluks, exit our igloos, and get a good sun-burn! Oh, and start checking out the festivals that pop up almost as numerously as daffodils.

Around these parts it is Tulip Festival time right now (first three weekends in May). The royal family of the Netherlands was given shelter in Canada during WWII, and when the queen was giving birth the Canadian government declared her hospital room official part of the Netherlands, thereby assuring that the child would be born on Dutch soil (something to do with Dutch royal inheritance or something made this important). In thanks, ever since the end of the war, the government of the Netherlands sends Ottawa many-many-many tulips. And since they last more than one year, Ottawa has many impressive beds of tulips blossoming around now.

Aside from seeing the flowers there are bands playing and other things going on. Nothing that is really exciting me this year, but The Tulip Festival is still a sign-of-spring for me, so welcome all the same.

I'm really looking forward to two festivals this year:
- a neighborhood, weekend, festival near me, which this year happens to fall on the weekend when my son should be off at cub camp. I don't really care who is playing this year, I think we'll be there and enjoying the adult time!
- BlueFest, in early July. The bands coming this year are pretty amazing, even if the bigger names are not exactly what you would call Blues. It takes place pretty close to us, about a ten minute bike ride or maybe half an hour walk. We are considering getting a pair of passes, and see if we can get a babysitter a couple of nights, and take turns going with a friend a couple of other nights.

What festivals are you looking forward to in your neck of the woods?
