I came across this site tonight. It's an organization that donates knitted items to kids on Indian reservations who need warm clothing and orphans in the Eastern block. You knit the item (per their guidelines) and mail it to them, and they ship it where it's needed.

The name says knitting, but at least one of the patterns they suggest (the bootie/slipper one) gives instructions for crochet.
A couple TV shows I like start new seasons soon. I figure a couple hours of knitting each week while I watch and by the end of the season I might have something to send.
I haven't checked it out totally yet (what's that site that verifies non-profits?) but they look legitimate from what I can tell.
