This is direct from a friend of mine who is currently living in Cairo (having been evacuated earlier and recently returned):
"Tahrir square is twenty minute walk from my flat. Yesterday, eleven people were killed with machetes - because a Copt wanted to marry a muslim girl and the girl's father didn't protect her honor by killing the guy, someone killed the father, then the father's cousin killed the killer, and then everyone burned down a coptic church. Then protests about that in Tahrir turned murderous. I was out grocery shopping at the time."
N.B. A Copt is a Christian. The Eygptian Coptic Christians are one of the oldest Xtian sects on Earth and form about 10% of Eygpt's population.
