God, Louise, and the YMCA.
I am not entirely sure that the Lord God Almighty himself could make Louise to something she did not wish to do. I do know that it is certainly not within my merely human powers to ever make Louise do something that she did not wish to do.
That said, sometimes Louise will let me encourage her to do something if she feels it is basically a good idea but has trouble getting up the will to do it.
Louise has an arthritic hip and, to help with mobility has purchased memberships for both herself and me in the local YMCA. The local YMCA has a heated swimming pool where, three times a week, people can come and be led in a variety of exercises designed to help improve mobility in arthritic joints. In winter with its 36 inches of snow and resultant snow-covered roads Louise greatly reduced the number of times she attended these classes. Now with spring Ive been encouraging her, with success, to attend them more regularly. Each class is an hour-long and the last 10 to 15 minutes are for free choice activities. During the free choice activity time Louise and I dance. We jitterbug slowly, we waltz slowly, we two-step slowly, and we freestyle very slowly. During this dancing Louise is able to do a great deal more movement of her arthritic hip then she could if she was not in the water. For me, a side benefit is that I am able to dance while holding tightly in my arms a beautiful woman who was happy to be held tight against my body.
What is the benefit of all of this activity? You may remember that in February Louise slid to the floor and I had to round up neighbors to help get her up. Twice in the last week Louise has slid to the floor and both times, with minimal help from me, was able to get back onto her feet. While I do not know for certain, I at least think that the exercise in the arthritic swim class is what has made the difference between calling in the neighbors and Louise being able to do it almost exclusively by herself.
