Hair Barrette Problems

I recently bought these hair barrettes in somewhere like Kmart or Walmart. They are so cute. I wore them once and they caught in my hair and I had a devil of a time getting them out. It got caught in the flowers there between the rows of flowers. I had to practically cut one of them out of my hair. Wondering if anyone knows what I can do to keep them from catching in my hair again like that. I'd hate to have to take them back cuz they are so cute...
