OK, I'm totally fed up with my hair!

I have really long hair (down to my bottom) and I usually love it long. When I have had it short in the past it was because I donated it. I was looking to do the same this time around but it's in pretty bad shape. I've neglected it and the ends are just sad looking. I need to chop a good 5 inches off just to have it look healthy again. Since I have to cut it anyway I thought I'd look into some kind of style as well. The times I donated my hair I gave as much as I could and usually ended up with a style that was either chin-length or shoulder-length. I don't want to go that short just yet. Basically, I'm looking for a trim to get rid of the damaged stuff and some kind of style. Right now my hair is pretty much all one length. Stylists have told me that my hair is thin but there is lots of it so I need something that will work for that type of hair. Also my hair is generally not curly or straight. I guess wavy is the best way to describe it. Still, I can easily make it one way or the other with some prep work. I have to say as I get older my hair becomes more straight than curly/wavy.

In the past, I've had long layers, bangs, and layering around my face. All looked nice and were fine but I'm looking for something a little different, something that's still long but....I dunno, a style of some kind.

Once when I was in my teens I put my hair in a ponytail and chopped it midway down the tail. The end result was a choppy layered look and gave me very full waves. I loved it but my hair is different now and I doubt it will be quite as full looking. Plus, I don't know if I'm as brave (or as crazy) as I was when I was a teen.

So, I'm looking for thoughts, suggestions, pictures, anything!

HELP!
