Have you ever told a grandparent/relative that they have something you wish to inherit?

My grandmother (90 years old) has an old pedal sewing machine that belonged to my grandfather.

I would really like to have it in my home one day...

There are other relatives that may decide they want it too... I would like to avoid a "fight" for it later on. However, I don't want my grandmother to become upset by my asking.

Is it wrong to ask her to leave it to me? How do you approach this without causing anger?

Is there a correct way to handle this or should I say nothing.

I would be interested in hearing from others that have experience with this situation.
