Mayor of Fatopia
so, we have all heard the HORROR stories about health care providers who do not know how to deal with the fat patient... but what about the health care provider - the doctor, the nurse, other medical support staff - that provide treatment with sensitivity and understanding???
while i have had bad experiences here and there, i have also had really positive experiences... today at my yearly checkup, i discussed my health with my new doctor and my views on my body and my health... after looking at my blood workup, blood pressure, etc, she ended our appointment by telling me "you are healthy! live your life and enjoy!"
i then took the opportunity to praise her for her professionalism, her outlook and fat positivity. i told her that there should be more doctors out there like her - who evaluate the patient based on the patient, not based on weight alone... i shared with her some insight on the discrimination that the fat patient deals with, and she was genuinely horrified...
what was great about this experience was that she was taken aback by the "fat" praise... she had never been told that her fat professionalism was greatly appreciated... in that moment, i did my fat civic duty for the day...
so, i ask - have you thanked your deserving health care provider lately? have you gone out of your way to point out that fat professionalism is appreciated and that unlike others, they give health care providers a good name in the fat community!!??!!?!?
if not, next time you have a positive experience with your health care provider, let them know that they are doing it right! that their professionalism, courtesy, and sensitivity has NOT gone unnoticed... by spreading the word, you may be a catalyst to change within the medical community...
as we say in NYC - small steps - big strides...
the big apple has spoken...
