Yes, I know it's too late, but humor me. As I have confessed on another thread, I am addicted to the crossword in the Guardian. A couple of days ago, the theme of the puzzle was birds. One of the clues read: "Bird that crossed the road." Seven letters, ending in 'n'. Chicken, right? Wrong. The answer turned out to be 'pelican'. Now, thanks to the jokes thread and Green Eyed Fairy, I know lots of reasons why the chicken crossed the road, but why did the pelican cross the road?
