Witness to the Thickness
I was looking around the forums today, and I realised I may have one of the oldest--if not outdated--avatars in the forums! I think mine dates from 2005, with a slight modification in early 2006. In those days most people still used symbols instead of faces, and the forums were just beginning to discover itself as a community. Photos and faces then began to increasingly appear, trust became real, meetups started happening and real friendships were made. (Face avatars are good.)
But as for mine, I was wondering if perhaps its a time for a change. On the one hand, an avatar is a bit like a logo: its value lies in its recognizability. On the other hand, why would everyone want to see a picture of me five years ago, when I'm different now than I was then? Don't people want to look to the left of the post and have some impression of the person in the 70x100 frame actually sitting next to them saying the words they're reading?
I've noticed most people seem to change theirs about once a year or so. Why is that? Just to keep things fresh? And what's the story behind the avatars? As for me, its a photo taken one random afternoon at my old apartment, with the words "Plus Size Avatar" added in when I joined the Clubhouse in 2006 (referencing the extra 30-pixel avatar allowance).
Forgive the verbosity...how old is your avatar, when/why did you decide to change it, and is there a good story behind the one you chose?
