Uh oh. Last night I caught my husband in his den watching big round heavenly bodies again: the Science Channel had documentaries on Mars and Venus. ;)

The fare in our living room was even worse: I stumbled on a Discovery Health program called I'm Fat Again with Bob Greene. Despite my best efforts not to watch, curiosity got the better of me. There was one couple who had WLS but regained the weight, and another woman who was a repeat yo-yo dieter. What I found objectionable was that the subjects had so much in their favor. They had happy home lives, gorgeous houses, good careers etc., and they were obviously intelligent, well-educated and successful. Yet the women were made to feel like inadequate failures because they weighed over 200lb! They also mentioned some potential health problems, but methinx they were caused more by their repeated cycles of losing and regaining weight rather than by the weight itself. There's much to be said about the benefits of good simple stability at any weight, but of course they said nothing about it. The program also couldn't resist showing these women reduced to tears. "I know you don't want to hear this, but you really need to know why you're fat." Well, I know why I'm fat, it's because I know my priorities and I enjoy living, that's why! I also steer clear of junk food and go straight for the good stuff. My fat is made of only the finest ingredients. :D

A little balance please? Too bad we couldn't see the fat people whom Bob Greene might have approached to be on his show, but told him to get lost. It would be soooo nice to see a program entitled I'm Fat and Doing Just Fine Thank You Very Much, but that's probably only a pipe dream. And my alternative universe would have programs about fat fashions, and tips about better living through fat acceptance, romances with fat leading ladies etc. etc. etc. Unfortunately conflicts and crises garner the ratings. :(

A little balance: Later on the Game Show Network I happened to catch part of the Newlywed Game, hosted by Carnie Wilson, who has been wayyyy too public about her weight issues. The glorious irony was that one of the happy newlywed couples included a laughing, smiling fat woman! Atta girl! :)
