i've been around the community for years now and i have noted a few things. one is the focus on the negative aspects of what the world thinks about us being fat. it's understandable for people to have a need of understanding and places to vent. but i keep thinking that there are times when the anger far out weights the joy and celebration we should be finding in just being ourselves as we are.

i think it was John Stuart Mills who said something about people not doing things they don't benefit from. so somehow we must be finding mainly hanging on to anger to be beneficial. i think it is so important to have a catharsis among people who understand. but can the anger become a crutch and an excuse for not loving ourselves and the world we live in? can abuse become a reason to hate the world and ourselves and to turn away from the things that are good.

i've been waiting for a massive fat love march, a fat is beautiful campaign like black is beautiful for a long time. it hasn't really ever come except on a very low level. mainly i've seen a whole lot of reinforcement about how the world finds us all so disgusting even among ourselves with us echoing and broadcasting that message in the guise of disagreement.

i remember as a girl when being black as thought to be unattractive in white culture. now everyone wants a big butt, big lips, big thighs and a tan. i think it has a lot to do with the stand that black people took about their own beauty and how they expressed that. i keep wondering where the fat stand is. where is our big smooth public relations campaign? where are our grass roots movements? where are our musicians artists and intellectuals hiding? am i the only one who feels that way? am i way off base? all i can say is i'm really ready for some positive excitement to get involved in instead of being so caught up in the abuse.

PS:this is not to say that people working for rights against abuse are wrong just to say where is the alternative? is not being abused all we've got?
