Not too long ago I was reading a book for a class. At one point the author mentions that obesity rates increased as smoking rates decreased (between 1980 and 1999). It seems that America stopped smoking and started eating. Interestingly, an article from cnn.com was posted that included a map that showed obesity rates increasing between 1980 and 2000 rather sharply. The book was Richard DeGrandpre's The Cult of Pharmacology if anyone's interested.
