Hello Friends
It's late in the shipping season here in Duluth, half (the most important half) of the Twin Ports, Duluth, MN and Superior, WI. I'm spending a few days in our condo, close to the harbor and the bridge, but some 400 ft. above it. At 12:20 pm, I noticed a large vessel approaching the harbor and dropped everything to grab my camera. It's Dec. 14, 2006, way past the 'Gales of November' period, and November 10th, the day which marks the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Unbelievably, the waters are still calm.
The approaching ship was the American Century, at 1000', a large, but not the largest ship to ply the Great Lakes. I thought that this must be one of the last ships which would clear the harbor for the season, but the Duluth Shipping News confirms that the waters will still be pretty lively for a while yet. To quote: "The official closing date for the Sault Ste. Marie Locks (U.S.A.) is 2400 hours January 15, 2007" so we'll still have some traffic to watch when we come up to celebrate New Year's.
Check out the DSN link, below. It's a great way to get an impression of my home town, from the working end.
