December 8, 1980. I was 17 years old. I was in my room at my desk listening to Monday Night Football. I think New England was playing Miami. I don't know why I was listening to the radio and not watching it on TV. Suddenly, I heard an abrupt news cue signal, and without knowing the content of the report, I had an alternately sick, then an anticipatory feeling; maybe President-elect Reagan was hurt or sick, or maybe President Carter. In the next split second, I thought maybe the hostages in Iran were about to be released. What was reported left me motionless. There was no cry or yelp, just air going out of me and a feeling of nothingness.
