Knee joint replacement

I have a friend who is about 55 years old and weighs about 300 pounds. When she is walking her knee joints cause her a great deal of pain. She has found a surgeon who says that he will do both of her knees although at separate times. Has anyone here had any experience with knee joint replacements?
