Check out the chart in the linked article. When we look at the income of the middle 50% of the population (i.e. from the 25th to 75th percentiles) an interesting trend appears -- middle class people do best on the west coast. The top four cities for middle class income are all on the west coast (San Jose, Seattle, San Francisco, and Portland).

Its also interesting that these cities are some of the most liberal in the nation.
