I just picked up her new anthology CD, "Reflections (A Retrospective)." She is one of the important voices in music of the 90's and this decade. Many try but fall short to combine the dark soul ballad with the hint of gritty funk, which Mary J nails nearly everytime. She's wonderful because she can't quite be accurately compared to the soul mistresses of the past, even though Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan come to mind, and again somewhat inaccurate comparisons. I did some reading and the thing that surprised me is that she is now 36 years old and has been a fixture since the early 90's.
Without further drama, here's the Mary J top 10:
10.."Everything" (1997)
9...."Love @ 1st Sight" ...f/Method Man (2003)
8...."I'm Goin' Down" (1995)
7...."No More Drama" (2002)
6...."Rainy Dayz" ....f/Ja Rule (2002)
5...."Real Love" (1992)
4...."I'll Be There For You/You're All I Need To Get By" Method Man f/.... (1995)
3...."Be Without You" (2006)
2...."Not Gon' Cry" (1996)
1...."Family Affair" (2001)
note: Mary J has a current hit in it's chart run, "Runaway Love" teaming up with Rap hitmaker, Ludacris.
